Content:

As fascinating and rewarding research can be, doing a doctorate is usually a long, and often exhausting process that comes with many challenges. Some of these challenges are attached to the research process itself or derive from the mere scope and duration of the project extending over several years. Other challenges may come with your ambivalent role as doctoral researcher and ‘student’ or may arise from your specific work and life situation in which your doctorate may not be the only matter to handle. Preparing you for this process—on a mental and practical level—is the aim of this workshop. Treating different aspects of planning and motivation, it is designed to provide you with a great start into your doctorate and equip you with a toolkit for a successful process onwards. In covering these issues, we will work with a mix of brief inputs, applied exercises, as well as elements of self-reflection and group exchange. In all that, the workshop hopes to convey a supportive and solidary spirit that builds on the strengths of peer-to-peer support.

In this spirit, the workshop will end with the facilitation of peer-coaching groups to meet in a monthly interval over the rest of the semester. Following the structure of a ‘success team’, these groups are meant to provide you with a regular framework to hold yourself accountable for your own targets and to monitor your progress, while offering an open space to share specific challenges you have been facing. Joining such a peer-coaching group will be an optional element of the workshop, though everyone is emphatically welcomed to test the format.
