Basis for this lecture are the guidelines for good scientific practice issued by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in 1998 and 2013, as well as the Humboldt-University guideline issued in 2014. The lecture will use malpractice cases of the past to explain what is good scientific practice and how its application can be assured. This includes definitions of terms (fabrication, plagiat, obstruction, etc.), examples for proper storage and access to primary data, introduction to the “ombuds system”, some interactive case examples (How would you decide if you were ombuds person?), software (mostly online tools) to detect plagiarism and how to interpret search results, authorship conflicts and how to solve them, as well as the legal basis of measures if cases of malpractice are detected.

In order to obtain a certificate of successful participation in the Graduate Centre’s courses, you must have attended a course in Good Scientific Practice.
