B2 Multimodal structural and functional analysis of materials
Challenges: Can we achieve multi-scale analysis of hierarchical materials? Can we find analytical tools sensitive enough for all length scales? Can we combine chemical images from different scales to understand the macroscopic function of materials?
Objectives: Research training in the area of multi-scale materials analysis will encompass both, the development of new methodical approaches for structural and functional analysis of hierarchical materials and in situ characterization of material properties at various scales. To achieve this, multimodal approaches including synchrotron X-ray studies, optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, mechanical manipulation, and modeling will be used.
