Getting started
Are you interested in pursuing a doctorate at the Faculty of Languages and Literatures?
- A degree in a subject relevant to the doctoral studies from a state-recognised university with an overall grade of ‘good’ or better. A Magister, Diplom or Master's degree as well as the "Erste wissenschaftliche Staatsprüfung für ein Lehramt" are accepted.
- A supervisor for your doctoral project
- For more detailed information please also check the Faculty's doctoral degree regulations (version 2024)

You can pursue a doctorate in any subject that is represented by a professor of the faculty.

If you have not yet found a supervisor for your doctoral project, you can inform yourself about the professors and their specialisms on the pages of the departments.
The following documents are required for admission:
- Digital copies of your university degrees (with transcripts of records)
- Registration of a PhD project
- Supervision agreement/Doctoral Student-Supervisor Agreement (can be customised individually)
Please send these documents by e-mail to promotion.slf@hu-berlin.de in two PDF documents:
1. One PDF contains your university degree documents.
2. The other PDF contains the application for doctoral studies and the supervision agreement.

The International Office supports international doctoral students in all matters relating to their stay in Germany - such as finding accommodation or applying for a residence permit or visa. In addition, the International Office regularly offers workshops and events aimed primarily at international students.

Cotutelle procedures are binational doctoral procedures that require extensive preparation and involve a great deal of bureaucracy. If you are planning a doctorate in the cotutelle procedure, please contact the Graduate Center or the Doctoral Office in advance.
